Deppea splendens

Deppea splendens

Rare seed pod cluster on one of my Deppea splendens. The plant itself was started from seed.

Is this something like a hydrangea? The leaves look similar.
Very pretty :)

Thanks all,
Though these do look somewhat like flowers the actual yellow orange tubular flowers dropped a couple of months ago. These are the curved back red calyces or sepals that held the flowers, they now surround the ripening seed pods. The suspended rounded clusters hold their color for months as the pods ripen and eventually dry.

Deppea splendens now thought to be extinct in the wild is from the cool mountain cloud forests of southern Mexico. The only known habitat was cleared for farming and no other wild populations have ever been found. Deppea splendens a member of the Rubiaceae (coffee) family now only survives with collectors. Seed pods are very rarely seen.

You are so lucky to have this plant. You must be proud to keep an extict in the wild plant from disappearing all together!

I see that this plant is your avatar and I looked it up. It is certainly special. Thanks for sharing.

That's beautiful! I do think I saw them in person; however, I don't remember seeing this photo.

The seedpod clusters can be colorful, they have sort of a metallic reddish look.

My plant, the one you gave me produced seeds pods; but, not so many of them, though.

The bees are frequent visitors to the flowers so there's a lot of cross pollinating going on between my different plants. Maybe they're visiting yours too, any seeds?

I don't have any flowers or seeds on my plant. It flowered pretty good last years and had some seed pods.

My 'Augusten' clone is always the heaviest bloomer, especially this time of year. It almost has more flowers then leaves. The others are just starting to bloom. Maybe you'll have flowers in the fall.

It was looking pretty good. Now that we're getting hot and humid weather again. It's not liking the weather.

Give it plenty of water. Mine are still holding up fairly well so far.
I not liking this weather though, our summer had been nice until this hot and humid thing moved in.

I'm giving it lots of water.

Yes, we had a good run of 2 1/2 weeks of very pleasant warm weather...now the heat and humidity is relentless (especially today). I'm hating it!
