You might not have room for an entire wood in your garden, but this area, under a flowering cherry, is just 25 feet square. The 'path' is topped up each year with the output from the garden shredder

We have done the same but not such a large area as yours, but all our shade loving and semi-shade plants thrive under a large holly.......

Looks like you've made the best of a difficult area. That cherry has been there a long time by the look of the thickness of the trunk!
