Early Autumn Downunder - potting up Alpinia purpurata plantlets

I've been missing the gardening jobs like potting up, Sandra. Summertime here is downtime in the garden, so it was great to finally get outside and get my hand dirty, lol!

Marguerite, I'll be planting some in a new garden bed that's in the planning stage at the moment, but most will be give-aways.

Are these from seeds or from the flowers of plants you already have?

Andy, these were all plantlets off one flowerhead that was given to me last weekend. I didn't have a suitable spot to plant the entire flowerhead, so I potted up the little babies instead.

I pretty much though that might be the case. I've seen this plant and other Hedychium and Alpinia species produce plantlets from the old flowerheads.

I wish this plant would grow well here. Unfortunately, it's a little too tender to grow well here in San Diego. (the ones I've seen look horrible in winter).

Many Hedychium and Alpinia species are pretty hardy. They grow well in most tropical and subtropical climates.

Alpinia purpurata is ultra-tropical, it needs warmth and humidity all year to grow well. It hates temps below 60ºF (16ºC) for any length of time!
