Maybe they smell like a hidden stash to the squirrels, or could they be after insects that gather round the plant roots, Seaburngirl?

Tell me about it, Sbg.
We've two adult pairs living about sixty feet away.
They sometimes dig up whatever treasure they've buried & at other times prefer to raid our communal bins, the wee so&so's! Lol.

not sure how many we have in total but there are regularly 5 cavorting up and down the trunk/fence. There are 2 dreys in the conifers in the neighbours garden. They are lovely to watch but pesky little things.

It's the foxes that are becoming a pest, digging away night after night & (although they're nocturnal) sometimes during the day. Obviously, this weather has most of their prey snuggling down, safe & cosy, which is probably why they're in my garden, looking for insects or, worse, my bulbs & fresh shoots n roots!
A handful of dried peas pelting into them does the trick for a short while, stinging, but with no severe or permanent damage.
I don't dislike them & while I sympathise with their hunger I just wish they'd give my wee strip a wide berth.
Fat chance. Lol. :-)

Do these spread like their blue cousins?
