Thanks Bathgate these were growing en masse outside the Reception area of the Hotel Hartenstien Museum Osterbeek, nr Arnhem, Holland. We were visiting on our way to the Ruhr Dams in Germany, for the Dambusters Raid Anniversary in May this year.

That sounds exciting. What happens at a Dambusters Raid? Is this a dumb question? I bet the food was good. Is this connected to Octoberfest? Bratwurst? Potato Salad?

Hi Bathgate, I'm really sorry I haven't answered your above question regarding The Dambusters Raids, before now... I think that I got totally tied up with floristry work before Christmas and didn't come on Goy very often.
Anyway, here is some background information about the Dambusters Raids.

In April 1943 a special squadron was formed by the RAF. They were trained to attack the large Dams found in Northern Germany, using a special bouncing bomb. On the 16th May 1943 Nineteen Lancaster aircraft, lead by Guy Gibson, attacked the dams flying at 60 feet! They breached the Eder and Mohne Dams, but eight of the Lancasters were shot down. 53 of the 133 men who took off were killed
When you see the Dams, and realise that they had flown at the dead of night at a height of 60ft across Europe, from the Dutch coast into Germany - and then fly the heavy aircraft at low level over water, against defended targets - Then fly back out of Germany and Holland and back to the UK. It's only then that you understand what they did was very brave and very special.
Guy Gibson won the Victoria Cross for his part in the raid.
A film called "The Dambusters" was made in 1955 and is still shown here on TV and available on dvd! It's well worth watching if you are interested (but be warned it's in black and white!)

Thanks Tracey for the explanation. Yes, I agree they were very brave. They had to be, they were fighting for their very lives and honor. Amazing act of bravery and execution. The Polar Vortex that has descended upon us from the Arctic has finally passed. I think it's headed your way but should be as severe. Thanks for your well wishes.
