Salix Hakuro Nashiki

Salix Hakuro Nashiki

These Salix leaves are stunning at this time of year, despite slight scorching by the oh so cold north and east winds we've had. And the tree is full of Sparrows singing from dawn to dusk....no nests, just a perching place, I think! There has been a small nest box sited in the tree for 6 or 7 years, but never used.maybe it's because of the cold winds that come off the fields behind it!

Thnks SL and Karen. Absolutely huge, Karen.Only been in 9 years but is much bigger than I'd expected.Obviously on a very strong root stock! I particularly wanted one on a tall (tree) stem instead of the half standards you often see but still didn't expect it to grow this big.I usually cut it in late summer but didn't get round to it last summer so cut it back hard this spring and it's now much bigger than it was before! It obviously liked the trim! Now approx 12 ft tall and 8 ft diameter

That's great! Next door planted one and then went away and let their house. As soon as their backs were turned, the rootstock sprouted shoots and before you knew it there was a huge and unsightly willow tree sprouting everywhere. When the tenant moved out and the next ones came I mentioned it to them. They did a lot of pruning and 'found' the original variegated pinkish willow, and it is still growing, but very small and now with great big scars on the side of the trunk where the rogue shoots were! it looks really odd! I'm glad it's not in my garden! It wouldn't be so bad if it grew like yours, but it's still a tiddly little thing on top of this huge trunk with all the heavy prunings!

Thanks Louisa!
Oh dear Karen, doesn't sound good! This trunk is getting very thick too but any shoots get nipped off straight away!

We originally purchased it Holly as Lloyd our youngest wanted one because his grandad had one in his garden which Lloyd liked and when we moved here his grandad passed away just a few days later. We still refer to it to Lloyd as the grandad tree! Although, that was on a dwarf/half standard root stock!

Ahh thats a nice way for his grandad to be remembered...
