Abies nordmanniana - Nordmann Fir

Abies nordmanniana - Nordmann Fir

Nordmann Fir suppose to be a big tree but this thing grew about 2 inches in 3 years.
Top was munched on by deer. They do like the young needles.

Hi Klahanie, this is so beautiful fir! I bought one for Christmas as Christmas tree and I was so sorry this tree had to die, as it was so elegant and symmetrical. Do not worry, this is typical speed of growth in firs. When they are small, they grow slowly, however, when they reach height of around meter, their annual growth is around 50 cm. I have abies balsamica and bought it in the mountains from woodsman´s daughter who used to sell flowers and small trees. It was 30 cm in 2007. Now it has 160 cm, but first three years I couldn´t believe I bought a real tree. It is very symmetrical, from above (I still can look on it like that, lol) it looks like perfect hexagon. I would say that fir is a Lady and Spruce is a Man in my garden. They are really different ;-)

Thanks for the encouragement Katarina. It is interesting how we make plant associations. I do that as well.

Floralhead2, the light tips are the new growth...finally.

how big might it be eventually?

Floralhead, I read they grow 60 m here but some in Russia are over 80 m. Big tree but I will be happy to see 3 meters(or 10 feet) in my life.
