I'd say identical in flower to Veilchenblau, but less vigorous , not as healthy, and without the semi-evergreen lushness of 'Violetblue'...but better for a fence perhaps, as it won't overwhelm it's host. I have them both and Veilchenblau is a better plant healthwise.

Yes, thanks Tet. I bunged that elder in this spring, and it's making a huge improvement in that border! :)

Lovely combo Karen, I will be buying an Elder. The soil here is like concrete now so no chance of planting anything for a while + I would have to keep watering the garden as well as the pots. I cut the bottom lawn yesterday evening and put the sprinkler on to give it a good soak but it looked like straw this morning. The side lawn always fairs better in summer:o)

Thanks Annie. my long side woodland border hasn't dried out at all and I haven't watered it. I'm sure there is a spring somewhere under there! Grass is still green, and hasn't been watered either. It's a pain when it's wet, but a godsend this year!

Strange how the lawn at the top of the hill does better than the one at the bottom here, having said that it does get very hot done there being so enclosed. An underground spring would be handy hun:o)

Yeah...I guess it would be if it weren't raining every year but one in seven! ;)

Like the combo Karen, the starry flowers set the rose off nicely.
