New Zealand Flax (?) Flower

Planted this about 8 years ago and this is the first year it has flowered!
Hubby says it is due to his diligent watering of the young hedge nearby helping the plant to flower...nothing to do with the heatwave! What do other Goyers think?..As I'd like it to flower again next year!
More likely maturity - the ones at Brookes uni in Oxford are dropping their seed now so clearly bloomed a good while ago.
