This plant is very commonly grown in San Diego, CA. It can grow very tall in time. Madagascar palm is not a true palm. Photo taken at Quail Botanical Gardens on Aug. 6, 2013.

Yes, the flowers are very beautiful and similar to Plumeria blooms. It's in the same family.

Why are you unable to comment?
11 Aug, 2013
Because I no longer comment on the photos of Plumeria that you tease us with!!!!!

That's another that can be grown in the bay area. I have one in ground, and another in a large pot that gets more sun..and its larger. No blooms yet. But huge leaves- much larger then I thought I would ever get. The in ground plant has done well in the 2007 and 2013 cold events.

Well,Hayward is in east SF bay midway between Oakland and San Jose. SF and surroundings are of tremendous microclimates. Also, the USDA updated SF to a 10b climate and the rest of the bay area 10a. I can tell you,I've seen and felt that change over 50 years of living here.
Hayward is quite a bit warmer in summer then SF..but not a hot summer climate. 75-80F for highs and about 60f for lows June- October. I have a 22 year old Howea palm going over the height of my roof. It seems like..even with a cold winter, the subtropicals pull through. Unlike the 1960-70's when the smaller bay are would freeze them out. Urban or Global warming has made even SF have warmer summers. Records have been set in 2013- and 2014.

Stan510:
I lived in the SF Bay Area for 35 years...I've only been in San Diego since 2000.
There's definitely a huge different in climate between San Diego and Hayward. However, all the years I lived in Hayward, I was able to grow a wealth of tropical plants, successfully. Hayward does get it's horrible heatwaves...I remember the times it's been up to 110ºF (43ºC). It happened when I was packing up in June of 2000...it was horrible heat! I am convinced that Global Warming has really caused many climates to warm considerably.
I agree with you about San Francisco...even though, it's relatively cool, freezing temps in San Francisco are extremely rare...and temps in San Francisco rarely go below 40ºF (4.5ºC) for morning lows.
