I planted this last year just a bit of root. Its because I like thistle type plants (well I am a Scot) I expect to be told its a weed but if it is its good un!

I intend to keep it I like it, pity its not a thistle though. Your other point about space - it was just a bit of root not much bigger than a golf ball, so I just put it in a little gap near the fence, it has outgrown that already!

It's a Cardoon (Cynara cardunculus) by the looks of it Pete. Common name Globe Artichoke. It gets huge, I hope you've given it plenty of room.
Mines is +7ft this year!
