There's millions of Hibiscus rosa-sinensis trees/shrubs here. Almost everyone has one or several in their yard, it's planted as a street tree and in front of industrial park buildings and businesses.

have they also been built around then like in some parts of England oaks and so forth were? its a native tree then i assume? from jane..

No, Hibiscus rosa-sinensis is native to tropical Southeast Asia. Many hundreds of varieties (cultivars) have been developed in Hawaii and California, though.

Great! They're so very common here.
There's so many beautiful varieties growing in my neighborhood and I think I've only posted one photo of a yellow one a few years back.

I'm just about to order some H.schizopetalus seeds I think.
Really shouldn't, but now that I've found them I'm getting weaker in my resolve to cut down on the tropicals.

I wish you luck with H. schizopetalus! I had one and it died (I just threw it in the trash a few day ago), it didn't like being in a pot. It does so much better in the ground.

As I say, I know that I shouldn't, but I'm weak!!!

You never know, it'll most likely grow well for you. Your water is better than ours here in San Diego. I think it's the hard water which causes problems for most plants.
