Dysis lutescens - Butterfly Palm

This palm is in front of a house which is being remodeled in Pacific Beach, San Diego, CA. It just needs need a good pruning to look good again. Photo taken Sept. 2, 2013 on Labor Day.

Most likely it wasn't Dypsis lutescens (which is literally impossible to grow there)...it was probably D. baronii (or onilahensis) which grows very well in the SF Bay Area.
D. lutescens in semi-shade (not deep shade, though) looks awesome here! Many in full sun look great, also.

In soucal,they need a boost of extra water and fertilizers. and if in no hurry,grow them under the shade of tall tree's.
I did see a young one in Fremont years ago. Trunk and all. He also had the purple King palm. I should try those..but the water situation is still touchy. Two green Kings take enough.
