Dragon Trees (Dracaena draco); Croton (Codiaeum variegatum) (Dragon Trees (Dracaena draco); Croton (Codiaeum variegatum))

Very young dragon trees and crotons. Most people have seen how large the dragon trees grow here in San Diego, CA in 100+ years. Photo taken on Labor Day, Sept. 2, 2013 at the Catamaran Hotel & Resort in Mission Bay.

Well,I think of the Croton as a Global Warming barometer plant. They were never long lasting even in soucal..now,they do pretty good.

San Diego is usually the exception with many plants (in Southern California). The climate here in the urban areas are so mild you can practically grow any tropical plant. I've seen so many plants growing here that I never thought could ever grow in California. Such as: fruit-bearing Jack Fruit trees, Delonix regia, Sopodilla, Soursop, Bottle Palms (Hyophorbe lagenicaulis), Prichardia pacifica and thurstonii, Licuala species, and ...and the list goes on-and-on.

The bay area isnt a soucal climate, despite what people think I think-lol. I know soucal is not only warmer- that warmth starts much earlier in the day.
BUT!..the last three years have let tender plants live to another growing season that I never saw growing up. It's us nibbling at milder and milder winters.
My 'Petra' looks good, some leaves a bit worn..but none have shed.
Do you know,I left out my Euphorbia lactea 'white ghost'..and it took the coldest nights without any burn. I meant to bring it in too.

Parts of San Diego are still much milder than many other parts of Southern California. We're able to grow so much more tropicals than most areas Soucal. We're very lucky here in San Diego.

I don't think of Euphorbia lactea ' white ghost' as being super tender....now, if you had said: Euphorbia leucocephala 'Snow Flake', then I would have been extremely impressed! :>)
