I've never seen such unusual plants before. Long, prickly legs, then a bright posie on top. Plant world is full of surprises.

Are these cuttings?
I've never seen them planted like this before. Typically, in the landscape they're much more shrubby.

This is first time for me too. There are plenty of the shrubby ones around with much smaller flowers.

Maybe they were trained as a single trunk.
I do like the varieties with large flower bracts. My across-the-street neighbor has a large one in front of their wall (like this posted one). It's a very common landscape shrub here because of its extreme drought tolerance. I've seen the large-bracted ones in pink, light yellow and white, also.

Those are nice. I see them here all the time. I like the ones which have the larger red flower bracts.
