My Ctenanthe is growing very well under my pygmy date palms. It's been growing here for many years now. Photo taken Nov. 9, 2013.

Yes, it's a houseplant for most of the U.S., also.
Most houseplants in other parts of the Country are grown into large trees/plants outside here in San Diego, CA.

The all green is hardy and evergreen in the bay area. The cream plant?..we will see. I have one that's old on my porch. I grew it indoors until this late winter when I put it outside. Slow indoors..slower outdoors.

Yes, I've seen the green and yellow leaf ones growing up in the SF Bay Area. They're pretty tough.
Calathea zebrina is another plant which grows well here in San Diego. I've tried growing it up in the SF Bay Area and it was much too tender.

C.zebrina..sort of faded away on me. Indoors it did great- flowered.
I know I was watching a soucal home improvement show..and they planted the Calathea with huge round rubbery leaves- C.lubbiana? as a groundcover. Is that really hardy down south?

They all grow well here; however, they hate the hard water here in the San Diego. Hayward has excellent quality water, just like in San Francisco.
