Brooklyn Bridge

Brooklyn Bridge

On May 17, 1884, P. T. Barnum helped to squelch doubts about the bridge's stability—while publicizing his famous circus—when one of his most famous attractions, Jumbo, led a parade of 21 elephants over the Brooklyn Bridge. At the time it opened, and for several years, it was the longest suspension bridge in the world—50% longer than any previously built—and it has become a treasured landmark.

I agree for sure, there are many fascinating aspects to this bridge, like one of the towers houses a wine cellar.

Nice to read about it,Paul..I wonder why they decided to have a wine cellar there, apart from the obvious of it being cold I wonder if that is a recent event,or was it built in at the time, maybe to store something else?

Hi Sandra: As I understand it, the room inside one of the towers was rented out to raise money to build and maintain the bridge. It turned out to be the perfect environment for storing wine and spirits. I hope you are doing well and all is good on your side of the Atlantic. We are having another storm, worse than the last one....Oh good times!!

At least they are making good use of it Paul, probably still rented out to the Wine companies,I guess..It isn't bad this side of the pond..not as mild as yesterday,as it's quite a chilly wind..frost expected tonight, then lots of rain soon..sorry you having another bad snow storm..keep out of it as much as possible, and stay safe ..
