how much rain have we had, moss in a magnolia five feet up off the ground.

Brian, we must have much more rain on Vancouver Island because all our older trees and shrubs are covered with moss, even in summer. It just dries out a little in the summer. We have very dry summers. No rain at all. I love moss. Our front "lawn" is 90% moss. Walking on it feels like walking on deep pile carpet.
Looks like your magnolia is waking up.

The grass here is very similar to how you describe not a normal situation.
Yes the magnolias are moving also colour just showing on early Camellias and one Rhododendron.
