I took out some of my many blood leaf plants which have been in the ground since 2009. They have been taking over parts of the front yard. Photo taken March 4, 2014.

Thanks! They're more spectacular when the sun shines on the leaves, at sunset.

Delonix, we are walking by this plant everyday and I was wondering about its name. Blood Leaf Plant is perfect name for it. You are right when the sun shines on the leaves it is spectacular. I have several pictures of it but it never looks as good in pictures as in real life.

Yes, it is a spectacular little shrub. It lives around 7 years and then I replace them with cuttings which are so easy to start.

Yes, Iresine is a tender, tropical plant. It cannot tolerate freezing temps.

Ours do not overwinter, OH takes cuttings and keeps them in the porch....

I know they're so easy to start from cuttings. I sometimes put them in water or even stick them directly into the ground.

I have even tried to keep them indoors from before the first frost's but they tend to die about Jan/Feb time

Really!!

They need quite a bit of light when grown indoors. Outdoors they usually like semi-shade (especially here in inland San Diego).

I can imagine.......

They especially need semi-shade when the temp reaches 92ºF (33ºC), like it did here in San Diego today.

Wow, yesterday it was warm like early summer, tonight it is so cold the heating is going back on!!

That's crazy! I've only had to use the furnace a couple of times this year...as it's been so warm to hot all winter long.
Today the temps have cooled down quite a bit...it's only 80ºF (27ºC), which quite a difference from the last 3 or 4 days.
