Hi Steve, for the same reason they were used here, but also as a protection from snowdrifts, when winds blew from fields.

Very delicate. But if there are rows of blackthorns, in a breeze you smell them. Very nice. Blackthorns were once, 50-60 years ago, used for wind-breaking, and so they were located along and between fields. These are the last remnants.
