Trachelospermum jasminoides - Star Jasmine

Trachelospermum jasminoides - Star Jasmine (Trachelospermum jasminoides)

The star jasmine is in full bloom. It's growing on the trunk of my Angel's Trumpets. Photo taken April 21, 2014.

Hi Delonix1 ... you nearly "frightened the life out of me" until I read that the Jasmine was grown up the trunk of an Angels Trumpet. We have one of these Jasmines growing up the side of an arch in our garden, I thought for a minute I was going to have weld some serious steel bars into the arch if the Jasmine trunk grew that thick :~))

We've had it in the ground now, for about 5 years and it's looking very healthy with new foliage, but no flowers yet. Can't wait for the flowers to get the fragrance.

That's funny! Yes, this jasmine doesn't have thick stems, though it looks a little woody. It's a super hardy vine.

This vine started blooming a couple of weeks ago.

Mine has croaked it! Too wet this winter I fear.

Meanie, that's terrible!

At least it's a very fast grower, when you get another one.

I nearly did yesterday, but spent some of my birthday tokens on a Clianthus puniceus "Alba" instead. I already have the red form (just about to bloom, watch out for the photos), but this white form was too good to pass over at such an excellent price.

Meanie:

Happy Birthday! Hope you had a great one!

Clianthus pinceus is such a common plant here. I would never buy one. I would just get a free cutting from someone. lol! I'm sure both will do very well for you...as they're such an easy plants to grow.

Thanks!

The trouble with Clianthus flowers is that the racemmes start to form in the autumn and then have to survive a UK winter!!

Meanie:

I thought it bloomed almost all year. I guess maybe not there in the UK.

C.puniceus is a spring bloomer here and in its native NZ. The racemmes need cool weather to start their formation. Are you thinking about Clianthus formosus (now Swainsona formosa) from Oz?

I know there's a lot of varieties...and very common in California. Sometimes I don't notice what the season is because our weather is pretty much the same all year.

I think Clianthus formosus is very common here, also.
