After 3 years I have a flower.

After 3 years I have a flower. (meconopsis)

This is an evergreen clump of leaves, 3' across and now after three years I have a flower and lots of buds too. It is not pink it is yellow. I grew it from seeds bought at an SRGC Show in Edinburgh (before I became a member). It was named as wysiwyg meconopsis pink perennial. The packet cost me 20p. I can't remember how many seeds were in the packet but I got three plants. One is in flower, a second has buds and the third is still just a big clump of leaves.

I put the photo on the SRGC website so I hope someone who knows about meconopsis can tell me what it is. It makes the Welsh poppies look miniscule. I think I will probably need to collect and sow seed and wait another three years to see this again.

Oops,Scotsgran..apologies for calling you Kath..

Been worth the wait then! It's a beauty. Don't think I've seen a Meconopsis with a head so full of buds like that. I hope you get an id.

No problem Bloomer. The rosette of leaves measures 44" across and the flowering stem is 40" high. Definitely wait was worthwhile. I think it might be wise to stake it if the high winds we have had recently threatens to come again. I have a second stem with flower buds too.

My goodness,Scotsgran..that is some plant, isn't it? I think I would stake both those stems..

After having a suggestion that it could be M.paniculata I googled the name and am almost certain that is what it is. My blue mecs are nowhere near flowering size yet.

Sheila, I was reading a garden blog (not on here) and came across M. paniculata - I immediately thought of your plant but see it's already been suggested.

Where did you see that Scottish. If you can remember where you saw it I would love to read it. I could not find very much about it. The first flower has lost its petals and I had two flowers today. They do not last long unlike the blue ones which seemed to stay for a long time. There is a nice seed pod developing so I will hope to have seeds later.
