Thanks Alan - this is a new bed I've been working on since early spring. My shed used to sit here. (I will be doing a blog on all the work I've done once the new part of lawn is presentable ;))
I take it you mean the plant with the large silvery coloured leaves. It's a cardoon (Cynara cardunculas) - what a heck of a job moving it to this part of the garden, it's humungeous!! One of the very first plants I ever bought for this garden.
I should have done the sensible thing and split it whilst I was at it but its such a good size now I couldn't bring myself to do it. They do get big but if you fancy giving it a go, I should be able to get bit with roots off it in autumn. You would just need to remind me nearer the time.

Thank you so much for the offer Angie. We are currently thinning and trying to go for easier maintenance, so I will say no thank you for now. Just having 12 rounds with a gang of vine weevil that have eaten the roots off one of our potted Acers. Flippin' things. It gave me great pleasure putting them in a tray and watching the robin devour them.

Ah, Allisium so thats what one of those looks like!, I planted one I got from a pound shop for 50p, they look nice, tall and stately. But looks like I will have to buy a few more to plant them together, as they look like they would look nice in a group rather than singly. Anyway that bed in your pic looks like it will be a stunner once some plants mature and grow into each other---Good Luck.

That's cool Alan, the offer is there should you ever fancy giving it a go. Your trying to thin your garden out and I'm trying to fill it out - opposite ends of the scale :)
Outlander, those Alliums are available in bulb for in autumn, it's generally the most cost effective way of purchasing them - other than self seeding. Which the apparently do - but I've yet to find any nearby the others in the garden. They look stunning in large groups. I'm hoping the bed looks good too :)
