This is the variety "Earliblue", sometimes spelled "Earlyblue".

I thought it might be, Michaella, but isn't at all. They do need ericaceous soil so do better in large containers with this type of compost. They also do better if watered with rainwater, which is more acidic than mains water. This I found the most difficult bit due to lack of rain here. But I put ericaceous liquid plant feed in the watering can every fortnight or so. Type "blueberry" into the search box to find lots of info. Good Luck! :-)

Thank you David.

You're very welcome, Michaella. I would suggest buying some 3 yr-old plants in pots from a garden centre/nursery anytime (you may be lucky enough to find some with a few blueberries on them now). Replant in pots c.30cms diameter using (as said above) ericaceous compost. Go for it! We actually picked and ate the ripe ones earlier this evening - wonderful!

I was at a large garden centre/nursery this afternoon and they had a sign suggesting that it is better to grow 2 varieties of blueberry together, for better pollination and cropping. Just thought that I'd pass on this tip. We're never going to get enough from this one bush to make a pie or muffins, not because we pick at the bush, but the ripe ones tend to just drop off and get lost. I also forgot to say what variety this is ("Earliblue").

My mom used to drag me up to the "Huckleberry Rocks" to pick the wild berries in late June, early July, and my dad teasingly called her the mama bear...because the bears used to bring their cubs to feed on the berries too!! One for the cup...two for my mouth...mmmm. sometimes after over feeding on blueberries we were prone to the malady my gran called "the blueberry quickstep".

What a wonderful family tale, Lori - thank you for sharing this! I doubt we'll grow enough to experience the said "Quickstep", but thanx4the warning!
