Can you grow peonies in your new place Odaatpat?

Beautiful one. I have Sarah Bernhardt, too, but it has larger heads and I have impression it has more petals then yours. I wonder, what does it depend from. Mine comes from the Netherlands.

Maybe yours is more established Katarina. I have it only for 2 years.

I have it three years. And it bloomed with very large, heavy flower heads on the next year after planting. I think, peonies do not keep their characteristics as, for instance, roses. For instance, the white one I have, had red sprinkles this year and vice versa, when I replanted an old one, which was red, into lower garden, since that time it has been blooming white.

Interesting.

What do you think about it? Didn t you notice that behaviour in peonies?

I heard that stress may cause a pink or red flower to turn white, I have not experienced it with mine.
There are other flowers who are known to do that. Irises, for example.
I have couple of ‘Sarah Bernhardt’ peonies which do not like the location I planted them in and I will dig them up and replant them. So we'll see what will happen to them.

Klahanie, i had planned to grow a tree peony...have it planted, but along with all the other planting in the area that was to be my back garden, it will have to go to Patrick...it was beautiful last year, young, with only one blossom, but stunning...i will miss it...............

Oh no....Tree peony would not affect your septic Odaatpat.... and they are beautiful.

Klahanie...is that right? Can i keep it, even if it is a tree peony? i have a spot that is about 10/11 ft from the sewer line...sure would like to save it, if i can...

They grow to about 4 feet tall. I think they are called "tree" because they are taller and have woody stems, it is actually a medium-sized shrub. I do not want to get you in a trouble and I know that most septic field people will not want a tree closer than 20 ft. Generally, I would say that the plant has their roots system as wide as the plant is wide and deep as the plant is high.(not always though) Maybe a raised bed could help?

Wow! That's gorgeous! It still has lots of buds.

It is a good year for peonies. Best in 10 years. We had a hard and longer cold snap in February (I was told). They are still going strong.

thanks, Klahanie...i think it's probably safer for me to make this a gift for Patrick...the manager here has given me a lot of trouble ever since i moved in (primarily because i used my own contractor, instead of one of her choosing..one that would give her a kickback, at least that's the only reason i can think of}..i really appreciate your help..i didn't know that about plants, and have been wondering about the depths of various root systems..that's a good rule of thumb....i am planning on raised beds...containers just aren't my thing, although i like to see them in others gardens, and the raised beds are because of my physical limitations, just wish they weren't so expensive...i'm trying to get some ideas for anything i can use instead of having them built...one good thing, the manager didn't want me to change the garden design...i like my paths....maybe i could use the dawers out of an old dresser..just brainstorming, here....

I am sure you will find something that will make your gardening a pleasure again . Good luck Odaatpat.

i love the way it opens up to the white...it just seems to set off the pink...looks great against that healthy foliage...i had a whole driveway border of peonies at my old home, no two alike..people often stopped and took photos..thanks for posting, it brought back sweet memories...
