I love your day lillies they are so different and you have an amazing collection. I am going to be cheeky and ask you a question which I am sure you will be able to answer. I saved seed from a new hemeracallis which I bought last year, 'Golden Showers', I planted the seeds and they are beginning to grow, yay! thats a miracle for me. My question is are they likely to come true to form I know nothing about plant reproduction I might add and also how long will it take for the plant to develop into producing flowers? Sorry for picking your brains but I am so pleased that the seed has grown, excited you might say, each day I have found another shoot popping up. I know I am sad but there you go little things etc. etc. thanks in advance. :O)

I am glad you like my efforts. Congratulations on the seedlings. From what I hear, you will want to pot them up and keep them in a cold greenhouse this winter. Golden Shower is a dormant type, so the foliage will die back, and light over the coldest part of the winter will not be a problem. But in the spring, they need light to get started growing, and it should be OK to plant them in the ground next year. It takes others in the UK about 3 years for the first flower. It should be fairly close to the parent plant, and I say that because Golden Shower was registered in 1953 when the gene pool was a lot smaller. You never know what you will get; as an example, the seedling above has a double for the pod parent but it came out closer to the pollen parent in size and colour. Sometimes the recessive genes act up, and you get something that doesn't look like either. I could cross the one above with something else and get a double because it is carrying those genes from the pod parent. If you have your seedlings in the ground now, around mid-September dig them up and put them in pots.

Thank you so much for the explanation Wylie, they are only just up and in pots so I shall keep them in my little green plastic greenhouse over winter and pot them on again next spring when they re-appear. Thank you for such a brilliant explanation. We shall see what I get I will post pictures eventually. lol :O)

Looking forward to it, but watch out - hybridizing can be addictive.

Think you have a lot more patience than me, do not think it will be something that gets me addicted. Too much gardening to do to keep it looking tidy to try out something new. Veggies too need tending so I am afraid it will not be something I get into. I will just sit back and admire all those that you produce. Much more fun. Thanks again for brilliant advice :O)

A beauty, the colouring reminds me very much of 'Selma Longlegs'

It spite of all the new doubles, I did try for some spider/cascade types (to try crossing to doubles).

My seed of 'Madge Cayse' x 'All American Windmill' germinated fingers crossed for maybe a spider double :-)
I was amazed today I planted out quite a lot of last years seedlings before I went away and would you believe one has buds!!in its first year a cross of (Yazoo Wild Violet x Wild Rose Fandango) x (Lavender Blue Baby x Black Ice) quite a concoction lol, really doesn't look big enough to flower.

I have 2 fat pods on the double (Big Kiss x Barn Owl) that used the pollen from Apple Swirl, hoping for a spidery double. Only 2 weeks to go before it should be ready to harvest.
I had gone around and dug up a few weak seedlings, and put them in pots. Now it looks like they need to be put back. Yours may have only a couple of buds this year, but watch out next year.
