Before it looked like a short fat tree, spreading more at the bottom occupying a lot of space, then I decided to get rid of the bottom branches. I am very pleased with the outcome, did the same to another one I have.

Thanks everyone for your comments, since having done that, I admire it even more now, looks prettier. I shall be planting around it in the autumn.

I do this too Michaella. It creates more planting space, and conifers can be quite dull sometimes can't they? But they are useful in the winter!
