Lobelia tupa (Lobelia tupa (Devils Tobacco))

This is my big Lobelia tupa. It's a good two metres across and at least as tall. This photo was taken about three weeks ago.

OMG that's huge !!! None of mine are that big you must have something in your soil it loves :-)

It loves this spot. There is another plant about three metres away that is less than half the size. This plant is in a dry spot and is shaded from the worst of the afternoon sun.

We'll mine have got the drainage but most are in full sun all day, I'll have to move some :-)

Golly is that ONE plant ? mine are in a dry spot and are also near a hedge that could be why they've grown so tall plus they are crowded together mine are in the sun all afternoon Kathy ...

Just the one plant!

Behind it (out of shot) is the Salvia glutinosa that I grew from Simbads seeds - it is equally as large.

I like my big plants lol ;-)
I grew a leonotis from RHS seed but I'm not really impressed with it, it's big over 6ft but the flowers are tiny , its a perennial and likes shade so I've planted it in the wood, the bees seem to like it but not sure how long it'll stay.

Which Leonotis? I have L.nepetifolia, but that's tender.

S.glutinosa is on borrowed time I'm afraid. Worse still, I gave Sue one. She says she's gonna have my wotsits for earrings!!!

Leonurus Japonicus Meanie pinky white flowers, it says its Annual or Bienniel it flowered last year died back and I thought that was it but all the plants have come back this year just as big, maybe the mild winter but my orange like yours didn't come back.
Oh heck get rid of that salvia quick then we wouldn't want you talking in a high pitched voice lol :-)

As far as that Leonorus goes, it survives or not. May get better with age..............

Both the Salvia will see out the season and then get dug up. I have a few more Salvia and a few Digitalis species that can fill the spots.

Too big for me, have enough trouble at the moment with giant plants lol

DD - assume that it will not be happy and that it will remain sensibly sized!

Well if you put it like that........I have a giant tree dahlia that is taking over the garden at the moment...besides a massive Melianthus, and a huge Rudbeckia Herbstonne, and a towering Macleya all in a tiny garden lol oh not forgetting the Paulownia.....

We suffer a similar affliction - our eyes are bigger than the space we have!

How very true!! I also have a passion for large plants.

13 Jul, 2014

I never mean them to get large, but this one is especially pleasing!

It is certainly an attractive shape, rather like our Euphorbia Mellifera...
