Dragon Fruit Flowers (Hylocereus undatus)

Dragon Fruit Flowers (Hylocereus undatus) (Dragon Fruit Flowers (Hylocereus undatus))

My dragon fruit vine is blooming again. It's been hot and humid and it seems to like this weather. Photo taken at night on July 5, 2014.

You caught it in bloom then!

Mine will be like that soon - not!

Yes, I was lucky. About a month ago it had a few blooms. This time I was able to pollinate the flowers (typically there's a lot more flowers)...hopefully, I'll finally get some fruit!

You'll be very impressed with the size of the flowers if your vine blooms soon. The flowers are usually around 1' (31cm) wide (sometimes wider).

They won't bloom soon in all seriousness as they've only just rooted.

They bloom from cutting-grown plants usually the same year.

All the night-blooming cacti are blooming profusely this year because of the hot weather. I noticed my neighbors' huge Cereus repandus (Peruvian Apple Cactus) are blooming like I've never seen, ever!

Sandra:

This was a light bloom. Tonight a dozen or so flowers should be blooming. I'll have to post more photos. I just want to get some fruit off my plant. It's only given me one fruit in all the years I've had it. I think it's in too much shade.

my ones seem to prefer a little shade. the foliage looks much healther than the ones in bright light.

Dragon fruit vines grow best in full sun on trellises here in San Diego. For it to produce fruit it needs to be pollinated and have at least some full sun. I see them here all over...and everyone seems to have lots of fruit except for me! :>(

I think I need to water my plant more and fertilize (I never have fertilized it, ever). Do you fertilize your plant?

no i don't..do you think i would get more flowers if i did?

I'm not sure. I don't know a whole lot about growing dragon fruit...as you know I've only gotten one fruit in 10 years the vine has been in the ground. LOL! :>)

Maybe I'll ask some of my neighbor's around my neighborhood. I saw a gigantic plant (a few blocks from where I live) this morning which had literally hundreds of flowers on it. Mine had 6 flowers with many bees pollinating the flowers this morning. I doubt I'll get any fruit, though.
