That happens, the birds (usually the Robins) eat half the seeds I sow. You can start them inside and transplant out.

very nice sun flower, ive only see a few this year in GC and not one growing in fields or gardens and only just a few down the allotments :-( which is a bit disappointing
for me.
I think the birds and perhaps mice must have feasted on the sunflower seeds i sowed as none (not one) developed into a sunflower :-(
