Clematis Ville de Lyon

Clematis Ville de Lyon (Clematis)

I moved this mature Clematis (been in the ground 7 years) back in spring time - it took a lot of effort, the rootball was MASSIVE! Glad to see the risk paid off and thank you Shirleytulip for the advice :)

Wow! I am so impressed! They are generally really tough to move! What was the great advice please?!

Here's the advice copied from my question:

In my Raymond Evison book 'Clematis for everyone', he writes:
The replanting of an established garden clematis is always a challenge but with care and a bit of luck it may be achieved. The only time when success can reasonably be expected is during the months of very early Spring before bud break when the plant is in its dormant period, or at least just coming out of dormancy.
The plant should be planted 5cm deeper than in its previous position. The large-flowered cultivars are the safest plants to re-establish, the fibrous-rooted species the most difficult as their very fine roots drop away as they are being moved and with very little root being retained re-establishment is generally not possible.

To be honest, I had already lifted it when she answered me and by the time I'd dug out the huge receiving hole it was about 6 inches deeper but once I dropped it in the hole, there was no way I was getting it back out, so it had to do. I think it was more luck than care! I watered it religiously until around a month ago when it started putting on flower buds. It's on it's own now!
The downside was 2 hours after doing this I had a docs appointment and my BP was high. Had to go back for check up and refrained from doing anything that day. All was good second time around.

Goodness me Angie....you don't want to make yourself I'll over a clematis! Lol! Glad you were OK the next visit! Thanks for that info. it seems the time of year is crucial...I shall try to remember that!
