This is another species of Adenium. I purchased this one February of 2013. It grows very well outdoor in San Diego just like my Adenium obesum. Photo taken Aug. 26, 2014.

Adenium grows very well outdoor here in most of San Diego.
I know in Hayward Adenium could never grow outside in winter. It's definitely too wet in winter. I know, because I lived in Hayward for many years (I used to live by the old Civic Center on Foothill Blvd).

I've had one for 6 or so years. Out in summer in the bay area..in for winter. Adeniums in California not in greenhouses are very subject to a sudden collapse if too chill or too wet (even indoors) in winter.
