Think it needs heavy soil and to be grown up a conifer of some kind. As with Clematis its roots need to be in shade and its head in sun. I have managed to germinate the seed by sowing in ericaceous compost, covering the seed with pine needles and left outside all winter in order to stratify the seed. Unfortunately however I did not manage to grow them into flowering size plants.
