My very good Palm Society friend was responsible for bringing many of these palms in from South America.

They've planted a few of these as street plants. One entrance to a highscale subdivision had three of these about the same size..near Niles.

At one time it was thought this palm would be as popular as Washingtonia robusta...unfortunately, it didn't happen.

My Palm Society friend planted the ones at the Palmetum years ago...and he was also responsible for the Ceroxylons palms there along with the large ones at Strybing Arboretum (San Francisco Botanical Gardens).

Is that Darold Petty? I almost bought a good sized Satakentia from him.

No, not Darold Petty, even though I've known him since 1984, when I first joined the Palm Society.

Satakentia is not so easy to grow in the Bay Area. It requires lots of high heat and humidity to grow well. Satakentia grows in San Diego; however, it doesn't look it's best here.

This summer was for the ages. Mesowest a couple of blocks down the street said my October average was 83f,hayx 77f. The last two summers have been like that..about 80f in summer.
And yet,I know those fog summers can come along..I hate those. We had one in 2006. I was given a nice Saguaro that year..and even up against a wall,the cool foggy 60's for weeks in summer,made it turn yellow.then collapsed.

I don't think it's the high temps which are the problem...it's the lows. Where it's native the night time temps stay in the 70's with lots of humidity day and night.

I think you may be thinking of 2010, which was one of the coolest summer in California (for many cities) in almost 100 years. 2006 was one of the hottest summers (or the hottest summer) in most cities in CA. In summer of 2006 San Diego County, many cities had the most morning lows above 75ºF ever recorded and the humidity felt like Miami, Florida. On July 22, 2006 I had a heat index of ~132ºF (109ºF with 40% humidity)....if you can believe that (it was the worst heat I've ever felt in my life).

Well,might have been 2004 or 2003. Time flies. But that Saguaro?..I tried. It died in summer of all things. I have the skeleton (ribs) someplace.

I know those years here were hot here, also.

That's terrible about your Saguaro cactus! I know they only grow well out in the desert. I've only seen one here in San Diego....although, there may be more.
