If it's a windy site you can't beat phormiums. I love the way they dance on the wind, they have great flowers and give colour all year round.

Your land reminds me of ours when we started the garden.
Hill top field, very little topsoil left, very exposed, vicious winds. Nobody did much gardening around there as mostly farmers in non prosperous area, apart from veggie plots. I had a lot of steep banks which i slowly got the better of. Mostly experimentation and anything that doesnt work doesnt get a second chance. Big difference between your and our plot is that i didnt see much rain in summer and you will probably get too much - and i didn't have any japanese knotweed! Good luck Taurman, I will follow your progress with interest. Btw I wrote a cple of blogs about my battles with our steep banks (cliffs) which you might have a look at.

Thank you Resi, nice to have had the experience you have had you as will take great skills back to Yorks. Sometimes we are fortunate not to see what we are facing up to as courage can be dimmed by looming horizons. This terrirory was the soil from which I was sprung so have a new admiration for my ancestry. bw
