Our mango trees are also flowering.

This one has small flowers. Its whats left of a tree killed back in 2012. The comeback has been fast,and it did have three fruits last year. Now,I wouldnt compare the quality to the tropical areas of the world. My view is,if it's living and growing and fruiting in the Bay Area,that's all you can ask.
Besides,my wife can even make use of bad mangoes..use them for cooking or with salt .
I do have a Champagne thats a few years away from producing the small yellow Mangoes. I grew that from seed started last year.

WOW! That's truly amazing to see a mango tree flush growth and flower in January, in Hayward! I'm in dis-believe. My mango tree in the SF Bay Area would bloom typically April or May...and that was in Mission San Jose, Fremont where the temps are much warmer than Hayward.

All the large leaves are from last years summer/growing season.
The red leaves? lol...from January. Its a vigorous and hardy tree. I never covered it at all this year. 33f didn't do a thing.

Petra btw,has half defoliated. I don't see any stem dieback...so when the warm starts it should sprout at the axils.
Mammy still looks perfect.

Like I said on another post,the last cold night (JAN 1ST) was predicted to be 39f or even 40f. Its dropped to 33f. Petra went from perfect to not!

You should have a great mango season in Hayward this year (I can't believe I'm saying this!); however, with the well above temps all the tropicals up there should thrive.

Sorry to hear about your Croton 'Petra'! It sounds like the damage is superficial, though. I've never grown this variety; however, I have seen them grown outside here. Croton 'Mammy' on the other hand is very hardy here. Mine is still growing leaves. Although, with this being said: the weather has been warm in the 80's here the last 5 days. It's going to be around 90ºF (32ºC) here in inland San Diego and low 80's along the coast for the next four days. This winter heatwave is not so unusual; however, what's unusual is for it be so consistently warm to hot.
