Hi Kath, looking very nice , but it's actually a Hippeastrum, there's only 1 species of Amaryllis, and it's the Belladonna lily, the bulb of this should be planted just below the soil surface, and flower before the stems are produced in autumn.
Hippeastrum are planted with the neck and shoulder above the soil surface, there are about 80 species of this, with lots of cultivars, Derek.

Hi Kath, you're not alone, most people just say Amaryllis, but they are separate plants, Amaryllis from South Africa, and Hippeastrum from Central and South America, Derek.
