This is a very common shrub or tree here in San Diego. It blooms from fall through early spring. Most are almost done flowering, now. Photo taken in Balboa Park, San Diego, CA. on March 18, 2015.

Most species are fall - spring bloomers. Summer they just look good with their leaves. Even Calliandra tweedii which grows well in the San Francisco Bay is a winter-bloomer.
Calliandra surinamensis is another really beautiful common Calliandra. It usually starts flowering in mid-Sept and sometimes will have flowers through May.

Fall- spring? I thought they were all summer. I've seen them for sale at the Dry Garden. Might have been in spring one year.
