I went to a higher terrace to get this photo. You can see there are 2 flower stalks. The upper is about to bend and start opening; while the lower has 2 pods open, and the third faces the plant. There should be a 4th and maybe a fifth flower. This type has very short flower stalks, and the flower head is about 18" long.

Makes the one in my conservatory look a little tame.

The common name is a little confusing: some call it white, others black Bird of Paradise. You can also find it as the Giant Bird of Paradise since it is over 20" tall.

They are quite something to behold , anyway Wylie .
The 20 ft one would be amazing .

You may not realize it, but Strelitzia are related to bananas. When this isn't in flower, people think I have a banana plant.

Its also a relative of Heliconia's and Traveler's trees. The latter its sometimes confused with.
Nice Wylie..they take some years to get to flowering age. I can only wonder what pollinates that huge bill flowers. Those flowers just drip nector at their peak.

It only took 10 years for me to get the first flower. This is year 11.
