First Lady Michelle Obama's community garden has tall papayas plants planted outside the perimeter of the garden and several banana and sugar varieties with endless fruits and vegetables planted on this 3 acre community garden. Photo taken July 14, 2015.

Yes, they are pretty easy to grow here. Practically, every house in this neighborhood has 1 to 10 papaya plants in their yards.
Many species grow very quickly...the Mexican ones grow a little slower and live and produce longer.
I just planted some small papaya plants a few days ago ...and they're drowning in the record, flooding rains of the last two days. It rained heavy to very heavy today from: 1:00 pm to 9:00 p.m. tonight...this was non-stop rain. Some areas around San Diego had over 4 inches of rain over the last two days...this is unbelievable for San Diego!

Chayote too.
Darn,Papayas are so easy there,so hard here. Mine after almost two summers? 16-18". I'm being generous.
