After seeing Samba's blog about his climbing squashes/gourds, I though he may find this interesting.
Climbing about 7/8ft, and then across!

ha ha...us gardeners are always looking to next year, arent we?
They had them growing over metal grids(not sure of a better description) the kind that are used for reinforcement of concrete I think (well thats what they looked like )

This is what I am going to try and master next year. Climbing small gourds over some kind of structure. I have an almost sound facing wall in my garden and I am going to try building a trellis around the kitchen window. I'll have to be very careful not to block out too much light doing this , but I think it will be good if I can pull this off!
I love the long stretched looking gourds in your photo. Excellent! Wouldn't they look fab hanging above the window. I'd be able to watch them grow in all weathers. I don't want to wish my life away, but I am looking forward to what next years seeds will bring.
