Saw the solution to lack of growing places for Iris on my recent trip to Normandy, France. Chaumiere cottages with Irises growing along the ridges.

I have been reading up about the Cottages. Clay is put on the ridge, then the Iris planted to help reduce the moisture in the ends of the reeds on the roof.
