Strictly speaking this Mexican species is a winter bloomer.

Me too. Just been looking at my S Amistad, flowering away looking really healthy but me thinking, it wont make it through the winter - I have taken cuttings. Do you give some of your more tender ones winter protection Meanie.

Amistad will make it through a mild winter or a dry average one easily enough. If they're tender though I just lift them and drop them in a pot storing in a cool greenhouse almost dry.

Hi Meanie. We have harsh frosts here. I will take your advice and pop in the greenhouse. I grew Salvia Sclarea Var. Turkestanica from seed thanks to Simbad and they don't survive so I always keep seed from it. I could do the same with that. Thank you

With S.sclarea I tend to overwinter some seedlings in a coldframe/unheated greenhouse for the first winter before planting out. Strictly speaking it's a biennial - it may hang on a year or two more in mild winters but with diminishing returns.

I see, thanks Meanie I didn't realise it was biennial. I will continue to save seed. You are so knowledgeable, thank you.
