2 year old Mexican Papya's (Carica papaya (Common Pawpaw))

Underwelming-lol. But,alive. If we have a wet or cold winter that would be the death of them.

They look great! All my papayas are doing really well. I planted some really small Thai Dwarf papayas at the end of July. They were only 5", now they're 4' tall. Papaya 'Thai Dwarf' grows much faster than Papaya 'Maradol'. The leaves are larger and more tropical-looking.

Thanks Andy- this isn't exactly the most picturesque part of my property.
I met somebody on gardenweb here in the bay area she's got a large Mango tree collection. Most in pots..but she has tall-for here- Papayas. She said she covers them when a frost is called.
This is a hot spot..2 years. They really must need broiling weather. Maridols.

The Maridols really don't need a whole lot of heat to grow well. What they prefer is warm nights. Most of my Maridol papayas ripen their fruit in winter. They are very sweet...as I let them ripen on the plant.

The Hawaiian 'Solo' varieties and 'Red Caribbean' variety really needs hotter days and nights. There's so many papayas in my neighborhood and neighborhoods close to me. Many people grow several in their yard. There's a house down the street which has a dozen or so in their yard. They're all loaded with papayas.

October was the hottest on record for San Diego. The daytime and nighttime temps were 10 degrees above normal. I could not believe the many morning lows in the 70's. This is more typical of mid-July - early Sept. The ocean temp here is still averaging mid 70's. This is just unheard of at this time of year (it's never been recorded this high in Oct nor in early Nov).
