Eucalyptus is the most non-native tree grown in California. They grow here by the millions (more Eucalytus species grow in California than anywhere in the world, outside Australia). Many grow to at least 150' (46m) tall. The really tall ones are dangerous when planted by homes, buildings or along the streets.

It was that very storm Andy mentioned that caused this. Lives were lost here as whole tree's fell in parks.

OMG! That's what the Eucalyptus trees look like here. The city still hasn't finished cleaning up all the Eucalyptus trees that fell and the branches along the freeways from the fierce wind storm from Jan 31st - Feb 1st. They're very dangerous trees to park by and drive by in a wind storm.
You most likely read about the women who was killed when a gigantic tree smashed her while driving by the big tree in Pacific Beach on Jan 31st. It was really sad! :>((
