This is the big boy of Erythina's in California isnt it? The largest species?
I've heard of the smaller tree type up here...never heard of anybody trying falcata.

I planted out my Braziliean Fern tree. It was not easy to get out of the pot. Like it had glued itself to the plastic.
50/50 it makes it. I waited too long.

Stan,

There's one large tree and two smaller ones that have not grow too much over the years. It takes a long time for E. falcata to grow large. It's one of the slow-growers. Most species are so extremely fast you can watch them grow.

There's a very large tree around 60' or taller off the 8 freeway in Old Town San Diego. It must be around 60 or 70 years old. I have older pics of this tree with my old digital camera. The first branches on this large tree starts at around 10'. It's a massive tree. It's the largest E. falcata I've ever seen (even in Hawaii, where I'm originally from, I've never seen one larger)

How do they get pollinated?

I've sure by bees and hummingbirds.

But doesn't the flower on this species remain basically closed?

No, they open. These are just buds...most hadn't opened yet (when I took this pic). This is really early for this tree to bloom. Most E. falcata trees bloom in late spring or early summer (this winter was another hot and dry one). They can bloom again in fall.

Many Erythrina species bloom during the winter. E. falcata is considered a summer bloomer.

Meanie:

Anytime :>))

I'll have to get some photos of them open.

I like the buds because they remind me of parrots' beaks.

Here's some on the internet with the buds open:
