This is one of two newly planted Pandanus which was planted about two months ago in Balboa Park, San Diego, CA. Photo taken Mar. 25, 2016.

There's several species which grow here. This is most likely the common Pandanus utilis.

I think its Pandanus furcatus. That was why I thought it would be a good buy- its subtropical aka The Mountain Screw Pine. I used to be in touch with a guy who was growing one in Menlo Park. He had some really rare for the bay area plants.
I really have no room for it...so I guess it wasn't meant to be.

I'll have to find out which species this Pandanus is...there's many that grow here.
I've mostly seen P. utilis growing here. I've posted several photos of the ones growing here.
