I thought this was a Tulip.

It is about 1" across. It took several tries to get it in focus.

I thought one was native to California...turned out to be a naturalized European bulb. Plain white flower.
And then there's the California soap plant (bulb) Chlorogalum.

Chlorogalum is part of the Liliaceae family; Ornithogalum is in the Hycainthaceae family. The one from California that I wish I had better luck with is Calochortus. My bulbs bloomed the first year I had them, and all I have gotten since then is foliage but no flowers.

Ah! Calochortus!..a Prof. I worked for in Natural Biology? THAT was his thing. I tried to help him get them...no luck.Nobody who had them would donate. Eventually he did aquire what he was looking for.
Mariposa Tulips, Calochortus- a blast from the past choice plant.
I cant seem to remember which one..just had a brown flower.
But its DNA is fascinating for some reason.

The Pacific Bulb Society had an interesting article in their newsletter on Calochortus. It seems they are growing wild all over California. It also had a few tips I am going to try this year.

They are mostly found in the gold country as I recall..not all,but that zone of where they get more cold, rain and warmer summers than along the coast. He wanted one that was just hard to find...eventually he did in the wild, collected plants with a permit.
