My Papaya. Still growing.

From what I have read on the net? I win coolest climate to grow a Papaya. This is its third summer. It will be under 5' by winter. That's 5' more than I had dreamed of. I truly did plant it just to admire it for a summer. Then,it lived!

Not this year. I hope for another try in 2017. The plant..and me too!

They can produce at this size or just a little larger...the only thing is that it would take 5 or 6 months for the fruit to ripen there. My papayas take from: 3 1/2 to 5 months or so to ripen here. Most of the time they produce the fruit in January or by mid-February. It depends on the variety how quickly they ripen. My most difficult one to grow and ripen is 'Red Caribbean'. The fruit took almost 7 months to ripen!

I've got to get some photos for you of papayas. I drove by most likely 40 papaya plants or more on my way to work. I drove by one that's about 5' tall and has gigantic leaves and the owners cover the fruit with clear plastic. I guess to prevent the birds from eating them.

It stopped flowering...growing,greener. Not a flower bud on it.
Its been a cool July,Andy. Only the last few days have been 80's.

It'll produce more flowers. Mine haven't bloomed yet, either. Sometimes I get more flowers in late summer than in early to mid-summer. Only my male papaya plant seems to always have flowers on it.

I saw today Andy, two flowers forming near the axils. Much larger then the spring flowers.
If they are small and runty by winter...the wife likes to cook with green Papayas. No waste.
