The red guava has really nice flowers.

I'm REALLY taking a chance on this one Andy. I grew it in 2007. The fruit I picked too soon- nothing on the net then about it- and it tasted like an onion.
The freeze offed it in its pot.
I've heard it tastes great in San Jose, middling for somebody in Fremont, and in Hayward a winter ripening is chancy.
The HD price was rock bottom,so ..gambling.

You definitely want the fruit to ripen red. I don't like guavas; however, I know how to pick them and give them away. LOL!

I have to thin out my large tree. It's full of guavas and I usually pick many of the green ones before they ripen or they'll fall everywhere and make a mess. Most are the size of a large cherry, right now. My guavas grow to the size of an egg.

Here's some of my guava pics:

Here's my guave tree when it was small...now it's more than 16' tall.

First, how are you on the red? You sort of left it up in the air as how the Red Malasian is. How big are the fruit? I thought they were like 3-4 " wide?
Second- I have been on GOY for TWO years? Already?..wow!

What do you mean: "how are you on the red?"

Do you mean to pick the fruit?

I pick my fruit when they become somewhat soft. Then I know they're ripe. I take the fruit to work for everyone to take...or I put them in the house as an air freshener. I love the fragrance.

Did you like the taste of the Red Malasian? I notice now that many Guavas ripen in winter. I'm not sure how that will turn out. Although I had somebody in Berkeley say that they taste alright..but not as sweet as soucal or the tropics.
Well,Its in a spot that gets all the Hayward heat focused on it- reflected from a white wall too.Sun nearly all day to sunset. A rare location for me now.

I don't eat guavas. I like the tree and the fragrance only. :>)

lol, well that why Its a test. My other open spots I think a plum or Apricot would work !

I think you'll surprised how will it'll grow for you. You can always wait until the fruit falls to the ground. It'll be ripe then. You just need to pick them up before the bugs start eating them. LOL! :>)
